Certification Course on Urban Heat Island (UHI) Mitigation Strategies

Event code: 80084

The Centre for Climate Research Singapore (CCRS) has projected that Singapore’s maximum daily temperature could reach 35 to 37 degrees Celsius by year 2100, if carbon emissions continue to rise at the same rate. This is compounded by the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, a phenomenon where urban built environment is warmer than rural areas. As such, the BCA Green Mark 2021 (GM: 2021) places stronger focus to drive carbon reduction in mitigating the effects of climate change.

This course aims to evaluate how urban areas can be better designed to provide natural cooling and implement initiatives to mitigate the UHI effect in Singapore. Industry practitioners will be equipped with knowledge to design and adopt innovative solutions towards a cooler Singapore.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
• Determine the causes and effects of Urban Heat Island (UHI);
• Determine the key mitigation strategies at both macro- and microclimate levels; and
• Analyse the suitability of mitigation strategies based on established guidelines and project typologies.

Overview of Urban Heat Island (UHI) Effects & Mitigation Measures

-       Attributes of the rising temperatures to global warming
-       Causes and risks of UHI effects
-       Research studies of UHI effects in Singapore
-       Introduction to UHI mitigation measures

Mitigation Strategy #1: Macroclimatic Level

-       Promote urban ventilation
-       Enhance outdoor thermal comfort
-       Use of high-albedo materials

Mitigation Strategy #2: Building Level

-       Optimise site layout, building form and orientation
-       Promote natural ventilation, cooling and maximise shade
-       Use of cool materials

Mitigation Strategy #3: Through Softscapes

-       Integrate water bodies/blue spaces
-       Integrate greenery-related design solutions
-       Encourage the adoption of natural climate solutions

Analysing Tools for UHI Effects & Mitigation Strategies

-       Demonstrate on how UHI effects and mitigation strategies can be analysed through computational simulations

PROF WONG NYUK HIEN is currently the Deputy Head in charge of academic matters and professor in the Department of Building, School of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore. He has also been the Deputy Head (Research), Programme Director for B.Sc (PFM), Programme Director for Master of Science (Building Science) as well as Programme Director for Bachelor of Building (Construction Management) and Bachelor of Building (Construction Economics).

HENRY WOON is the Director leading Atelier Ten (Asia) office in Singapore. Prior to moving to Singapore, Henry led a series of high profile, award-winning projects across the world including the Meixi Lake Sustainable Building Exhibition Centre in China and TMB Headquarters in Turkey. He specialises in combining environmental design principles and computational simulation capabilities with the practical engineering design knowledge to ensure that sustainable design strategies are deployed in the context of practical building service solutions.
