SkillsFuture Career Transition Programmes (SCTP) in Sustainable Design (Built Environment)

Event code:79032

OVERVIEW

Buildings account for over 20% of Singapore’s carbon emission.  Greening the built environment is therefore a key strategy to achieve the sustainability target under Singapore Green Plan 2030. To support this effort, the Built Environment sector requires a highly-skilled green-equipped workforce to design, develop and manage buildings towards a more sustainable future.

The SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) in Sustainable Design (Built Environment) will equip you with industry-relevant knowledge and skills to incorporate green building design considerations and strategies and perform environmental simulations, while ensuring that the designs are compliant to relevant codes and regulations.  You will also have opportunity to undergo the Certification Course for Green Mark Accredited Professionals and obtain the highly sought professional certification.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the programme, you will be able to:
· assist in the development of architectural designs using digital tools and platforms,
· gather necessary information for work approvals based on regulatory and legislative prerequisites,
· analyse performance of buildings against architectural designs, and
· adopt environmental sustainability and green building methods in building design.

These knowledge and skills will equip you to pursue a career in the Built Environment sector as Architectural Assistant or Sustainable Design Assistant.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Module 1: Introduction to Digital Building Design (Course Code: 79032 - M1)
January 2024   Duration: 2 months (Commences on 9 January 2024)

· Introduction to Built Environment
This course provides an overview of Singapore’s built environment - from the past challenges Singapore faced with regards to the housing and land infrastructure, to how various events had shaped the current built environment landscape, as well as initiatives and trends that transform the Built Environment.

· Technical Drawings & Building Plans
This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to interpret construction drawings and specifications. Topics include services, architectural and reinforced concrete drawings. Learners will also be introduced to the essential points in writing good specifications for tender and building works.

· Building Services & Building Technology
This course covers the functions and key components of buildings such as foundation, floors, walls, roofs, as well as building services such as plumbing, sanitary, fire protection, air-conditioning and mechanical ventilation and electrical. It provides learners with an overview of the building construction methods and process, as well as newer construction approach such as Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA).

· BIM for Architecture
This course covers the concepts and terminologies for Building Information Modelling (BIM). Technical details such as BIM modelling requirements, BIM discipline views and modelling methods will be covered. Learners will be able to apply the knowledge of BIM to generate 3D building models for architectural design.

· Advanced BIM for Architecture
This course enables learners to advance their BIM skills through advanced design development tools. Learners will work on a building project that includes files linking, family components, and material creation. Learners will also be equipped with rendering and walkthrough techniques.

Module 2: Sustainable Building Design Strategies (Course Code: 79032 - M2)
March 2024   Duration: 2 months

· Passive Design Simulations
This course introduces sustainable building practices and standards, and modelling techniques energy and lighting simulation.  Learners will also analyse simulation results against sustainable building standards.

This course examines the role the built environment can play in mitigating climate change. It looks at how buildings can be more environmentally sustainable through adopting various passive sustainable design strategies to enhance natural ventilation and daylighting. Case studies of green building projects will be examined. The course also introduces the Singapore Green Building Master Plan which lays out the national agenda in greening the built environment.practices and standards. Modelling techniques will be taught for energy and lighting simulation and to analyze the results against sustainable building standards.

· Sustainable Building Design Strategies
This course examines the effects of climate change and the role the built environment can play in mitigating climate change. It looks at how buildings can be more environmentally sustainable by understanding the various passive sustainable design strategies such as natural ventilation and daylighting, building massing and orientation, and also by studying case studies of green building projects. In addition, it introduces the Singapore Green Building Master Plan which lays out the national agenda in greening the built environment.

Module 3: Regulatory Requirements (Course Code: 79032 - M3)
May 2024   Duration: 1.5 month

· Development Control Requirements
This course equips learners to prepare architectural documentation for statutory submission and approvals. It makes reference to the Singapore Master Plan, Concept and Control Plans; and covers URA’s Development Control Parameters such as plot ratio, gross floor area, district zoning and conservation guidelines.

· Building Plan Requirements
The course covers the Building Control regulations, permits, CD shelters, TOP and CSC applications via the Corenet X e-submission system. It also covers Technical Department codes and requirements of the various technical agencies such as FSSD, ENV, PUB, LTA and others.

Module 4: Advanced Digital Design for Sustainable Buildings (Course Code: 79032 - M4)
June 2024   Duration: 1.5 month

· Design Visualization
The course equips learners with the skills to use modelling programme to produce 3D sketch models for presentation and visualization including the use of plug-ins for photo-realistic lighting effects.

· Building Façade & Performance
The course introduces the various types of facades such as traditional wall materials, stone and metal cladding and curtain walls.  It covers the materials, finishes and components, specifications, installation, maintenance considerations and good industry practices for the building envelope. The thermal performance of building envelopes and the subsystems which affect the performance of building envelope will also be explored.

Module 5: Green Building Design Criteria and Green Mark (Course Code: 79032 - M5)
J
une 2024   Duration: 0.5 month

· Certification Course in Green Mark Accredited Professionals (GMAP)
Learners will gain an in-depth understanding of BCA’s environmental sustainability legislative framework, underlying performance standards and BCA Green Mark assessment systems. Focus will be placed on green building design considerations and technologies, where the participants will learn the methods of identifying, evaluating and selecting cost effective solutions towards a more holistic green building performance.

*Module 6: Workplace Learning (Course Code: 79032 - M6)
June 2024   Duration: 3 months

· Industrial Attachment
