Essential Knowledge in Functional Safety & Cybersecurity for Lift & Escalator

Event code: 81037

OVERVIEW
With the adoption of Singapore Standard SS 550:2020 on the Installation, Operation and Maintenance of Electric Passenger and Goods Lift since 1 July 2021, there are new safety components (in a lift system) that are to be type-examined in accordance with EN81-50 which is a European Standard on the examinations and tests of lift components. Among the newly included safety components is the safety circuits containing Programmable Electronic Systems in Safety Related Applications for Lifts (PESSRAL) which are required to be type-tested by a Certified Body. Additionally, with lifts and escalator becoming more connected to networks and integrated into building automated systems, they present potential vulnerabilities that can be exploited to gain unauthorised access to the network, disrupt operations or cause harm to passengers and maintenance personnel. Robust cybersecurity measures could help prevent cyberattacks and safeguard data from potential misuse or unauthorised access.

This course aims to equip professionals in the lift & escalator industry with knowledge in enhancing functional safety of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic systems used in the lift and escalator industry.  The concepts in IEC 61508, titled “Functional Safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems” will be taught to give participants a good understanding on the principles, requirements, and guidelines for achieving functional safety in the lift and escalator systems. The second part of the course will cover cybersecurity standards and the best practices of maintaining cybersecurity in lifts and escalators.  It also teaches participants on how to identify the risk of IoT in lift, escalator and safety components and the ways to mitigate the risks.

Besides lectures, case studies will also be included in the course to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, making the learning experience more relevant and meaningful.

OBJECTIVES
The proposed course will explain the functional safety requirements of programmable electronic systems during the lifecycle of lift and escalator.

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:
· Understand Functional Safety practices in lift and escalator;
· Apply the appropriate guidelines and standards (including IEC61508) in functional safety;
· Explain the functional safety requirements of programmable electronic systems during the lifecycle of lift and escalator;
· Identify risks of I0T in lifts and escalator systems; and
· Relate the cybersecurity best practices in lifts and escalators

TRAINER(S)
Elena Mauro | Certification Expert | Liftinstituut

Elena Mauro is a certification expert at Liftinstituut with cybersecurity and functional safety as her areas of expertise. After working for many years as a safety consultant in the process industry, she now uses her functional safety and cybersecurity expertise in certification projects of lifts, safety components and machines. As a Certification Expert (FS&CS) she is working for the big OEM’s in the world.

Elena has an impressive CV. She studied Process Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology, where she also completed her post-Masters in System Engineering to combine process and system engineering. She then worked for a supplier of safety systems for thirteen years. First as a programmer, later as a system engineer and finally as a certified safety consultant. Besides her advisory tasks, she is also a very experienced trainer. She has presented several papers on congresses worldwide (IEES/Elevcon/Interlift/ELA/etc).

Tijmen Molema | Certification Specialist | Liftinstituut

Tijmen Molema is a certification specialist at Liftinstituut with cybersecurity and functional safety as his areas of expertise. Tijmen personal focus is on software; after 5 years of developing high reliable systems for environmental research he decided to focus fully on safety. As an old research engineer/developer, he loves to guide projects from the very first start to a successful product. As a Certification Specialist (FS&CS) he is working for the big OEM’s in the world.

Tijmen operates for almost 10 years in the Lift market for Liftinstituut. He provides trainings, presenting papers on this expertise worldwide (IEES/Elevcon/Interlift/ELA).
