UNIVERSAL DESIGN CONFERENCE 2016
Universal Design in Public Places

27th July 2016 • 9.00am - 5.00pm  •  Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel Singapore

Guest of Honour: MR LAWRENCE WONG
Minister for National Development

The Universal Design Conference is an anchor event for the Singapore Universal Design Week 2016.
Themed “Universal Design in Public Places”, the 1-Day conference aims to accelerate the adoption of UD concepts in the creation of

inclusive and user-friendly public places. This requires considerations made on the needs of everyone, including the elderly, expectant
mothers, parents with young children, families, and persons with disabilities.
A UD Exhibition themed “A Journey Through our Inclusive Public Places”, will be co-located at the conference. Through life-sized graphics

and product displays, the exhibition will feature the inclusive design principles from the new UD Guide for Public Places.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

MR CHIN CHI LEONG
Acting Deputy CEO (Building Control), Building and Construction Authority

Universal Design Implementation Strategy – Towards an Inclusive Built Environment

Ageing demographics and rising public expectations have become key drivers for a more inclusive and liveable built environment. To address the needs of all age groups and persons with different abilities, Singapore is moving beyond barrier-free accessibility to embrace Universal Design (UD). This presentation will share why UD is an important strategy for a future-ready Singapore, and how the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) is gearing to improve inclusivity through new approaches and objectives to accelerate UD adoption in the building industry.

Bridging the “Know-Do” Gap Through a Universal Design Approach: A National Perspective from Ireland

Building on a “culture of accessibility”, Ireland was one of the first countries in the world to legislate for universal design which established the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design (CEUD) in 2007. The centre focuses on the built environment, products, services and information communication technologies covering awareness, development of standards and education. Key to success is applying a participatory design process that enables all stakeholders (end users, public, private, communities, and professional bodies) to engage in defining the contextual issues as well as the problems resulting in better solutions, outcomes and consensus by all parties. CEUD employs a seven tier approach, involving information, education, toolkits, standards, legislation, monitoring and policy including the development of new resources, materials, practices and behavioural changes.
