Key Approach
We work closely with the construction industry and our project partners to undertake the R&D needed to drive the industry forward, and implement the solutions through collaborative research projects. With a focus on applied research, our guiding principle is to accelerate the transfer of technology from research laboratories by facilitating interactions and collaborations between academia and industry as well as by providing opportunities for the showcase of new technology and materials.
Funding for research projects comes mainly from government-backed research funds, such as the Ministry of National Development (MND) Research Fund for the Built Environment.
Research Focus
Specific efforts are currently being taken by the Centre for Sustainable Buildings and Construction to build R&D capability in the following domain:
-
Sustainable Construction
Sustainable Construction refers to the adoption of environmentally friendly building designs, construction methods and materials. The key focus of R&D in Sustainable Construction is to reduce the use of natural resources, increase reusability and recycling of such materials, and promote greater usage of recycled materials as alternative construction materials.

Green Building Technologies
Green Building Technologies are building designs, technologies and systems that are environmentally friendly and energy efficient. The key focus of R&D in Green Building Technology is to reduce a building’s overall energy dependence without compromising comfort and environmental qualities. This includes studies on air-conditioning and natural ventilation systems, artificial lighting and facades, indoor air flow and air quality, energy management, thermal comfort, vertical and roof greening, solar photovoltaic (PV) and building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) design.

Research Archive
Over the past few years, BCA has supported various R&D projects carried out by the universities, public sector agencies and private companies. The research results and findings are disseminated through seminars, workshops and publications. Many are ready for adoption by the industry and some have been commercialized.
