It was a bright and sunny day on Friday, 13 January 2012. The weather was perfect for our annual Open House at BCA Academy. Enthusiastic students from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), Yuan Ching Secondary and Hougang Secondary arrived, eager to find out more. Our friendly guides greeted and distributed goodie bags to them before going for the opening address.

Our lecturers gave the students an informative talk, starting with the background of the Academy then focusing on our Diploma courses, most suited to the tertiary students. After that they were led to various parts of the school. They went to the Sensory Garden where they could see fascinating types of flora followed by a brief tour of the Zero Energy Building.

At the IT rooms, our lecturers gave a short demo on how Building Information Modelling (BIM) works. After which, the students experienced first-hand modelling their own home. “This is really cool! I never knew we could do this on our own. I think life as a student here is quite fun,” said one impressed ITE student. Next, they went to the Design Studios where they played puzzle games and viewed the design display.

One of the most exciting and fun station was the Crane Stimulator room where selected students could use the crane stimulator to work on a real life work-site scenario. A lecturer explained and guided them along. “I am surprised by the facilities available here. This crane stimulator looked like a 3D computer animation game. Super amazing!” exclaimed one excited Secondary student.
There was an outdoor levelling demo outside the Construction Materials (M&E) Laboratory. Inside the laboratory, students saw the projects by our undergraduates. Other activities were happening while the students toured the premises. Basketball teams played friendly matches while bazaar stalls sold various hand-made items.

Their final stop was the Cafeteria. Here, they visited the booths for information on our courses and scholarship programmes. Their fascinating tour of BCA Academy ended after collecting refreshments and more gifts. “The Open House was an eye-opener for me! BCAA has great facilities and the courses looked so interesting. For sure, the Academy is one of the places I will consider,” said one eager ITE student.
